XRF vs LIBS vs OES: Which Technology Do You Actually Need?

A practical breakdown for industrial buyers.

Three handheld and portable spectroscopy technologies dominate elemental analysis: XRF, LIBS, and arc-spark OES. Each one solves a different problem, and most buyers don’t need the most expensive one.

XRF — the default workhorse

X-ray fluorescence is the right starting point for almost every industrial application. It’s non-destructive, fast, and identifies most metals you’ll encounter at a parts-per-million level. Modern handheld XRF runs an alloy ID in under 2 seconds with a >95% library coverage of the grades you’ll see in the field.

XRF’s blind spot: it cannot detect light elements at typical alloy concentrations. That includes carbon, lithium, beryllium, boron, and (depending on the unit) magnesium and aluminum.

LIBS — when carbon matters

Laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy fires a small laser pulse and reads the light from the resulting plasma. That gives you carbon, lithium, and other light elements XRF can’t see. The trade-off is a slight surface mark and a higher price point.

If you’re sorting L-grade vs. P-grade stainless, confirming carbon-content specs on welds, or buying lithium-bearing scrap, handheld LIBS pays for itself.

OES — when only a true OES will do

Mobile arc-spark OES is the gold standard for trace-level carbon and nitrogen. It’s slower, larger, and pricier than handheld options — but for some specs (like welder-qualification work or critical-service alloys), nothing else satisfies the audit.

How to decide

Start with the spec you have to satisfy or the alloys you have to discriminate. If carbon doesn’t move the needle in your decisions, XRF is enough. If carbon matters, LIBS is the right tool. If a paper auditor demands true arc-spark OES results, you already know you need OES.
